Flexible + Communicative:
The Practical Proficiency Curriculum is a flexible, research-based framework designed to make proficiency natural and easy by directing class time toward measurable, specific communicative skills.
Unlike traditional textbooks, this curriculum focuses on quality over quantity, ensuring students build a rock-solid communicative foundation and passion for languages.
How It's Different:
- Age-Appropriate for Teens: This program uses reality-driven interests (college, street food, social justice) that resonate with high schoolers.
- Not Overstuffed: It prioritizes the most high-frequency language chunks that allow students to navigate real-world scenarios even with limited vocabulary.
- Built for Flexibility: Every unit is standalone and editable, allowing teachers to integrate their favorite existing resources while maintaining a proficiency-driven structure.
- Spiral Progression: Concepts are revisited in an upward spiral, building student confidence rather than isolated grammar forms.
- Ready to Teach: No new skills are needed to use this curriculum. It focuses on what you’re already good at - teaching!
- Teacher and Student Choice: The curriculum is designed to be flexible and personalized. It offers multiple options for presenting, reviewing, and conversing with students. It also relies on student personalization. Plus, it’s mostly editable!

CURRICULUM PILLARS + PHILOSOPHY:
Quality Over Quantity (Not Overstuffed)
PPC maximizes class time on what matters most: understanding and interaction. By focusing on high-frequency language chunks rather than exhaustive vocabulary lists, PPC eliminates student overwhelm and significantly reduces teacher prep time.
Strategic Timing & The Upward Spiral
Units follow a scaffolded build from input to output, utilizing an ACTFL-aligned upward spiral model. By thoughtfully recycling key structures, PPC builds a rock-solid foundation that ensures student confidence doesn't fall apart by year 3—a common pitfall in traditional programs.
Personalization
Focuses on the student value-add to the classroom community with tools to help students personalize their language experience and get to know their peers.
Grounded & Age-Appropriate (Ages 12–18)
PPC is one of the few programs built from a high school perspective, grounded in reality-driven interests like college life, social justice, and global street food. Many other curricula are geared toward younger learners and rely on silliness to create engagement. Although there is plenty of fun in PPC, it is mostly grounded in reality-driven teen interests that are concrete, relatable, interesting, and relevant.
High-Frequency and Skill-Focused
PPC prioritizes the Survival Skills of language: high-frequency chunks, non-verbal communication, and the ability to negotiate meaning when words are missing. Students learn to navigate real-world communicative scenarios at their proficiency level, regardless of the size of their vocabulary. Speaking is the goal and focus.
A Framework, Not a Script (Editable)
This is a goal-driven framework, not a rigid daily plan. You get the structure and guidance needed for a rigorous program with the day-to-day flexibility to customize resources for your unique classroom.
(Early Adopters get unprecedented access to these editable files to truly make the curriculum their own.)
Foundational Impact: Novice Mid to High
PPC targets Novice Mid for all and Novice High for many within the first year. By focusing on the most challenging and impactful skills early on, we create a trajectory for long-term student success and retention.
Community-Building
The core lessons are based on class conversations in the target language. The resources make student-teacher interactions easy and low-prep for teachers. PPC facilitates frequent peer-to-peer interactions to build a culturally responsive classroom community with tons of student value-add.
Diversity, Interculturality and Social Justice
The ACTFL 5Cs are explored through the lens of cultural constructivism and developing interculturality through authentic texts. Students will both explore cultural perspectives and develop an emerging critical lens to examine their own culture through diverse voices from the target culture. Many lessons are aligned to SPLC Social Justice Standards.
